Genus-level macroinvertebrate methods limit the conservation coverage afforded aquatic species

چکیده

Benthic macroinvertebrate protocols, in the United States, have been integral implementation of Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. §1251 et seq. (1972)). The methods these protocols are designed to describe patterns biological water quality and ecological condition relevant legislative oversight, require a tradeoff between taxonomic precision protocol simplicity. global similarity evolutionary responses challenges life flowing waters, by stream organisms, has greatly facilitated development data from freshwater mussels, fishes aquatic insects into streamlined regulatory frameworks. Unfortunately, factors that expedite use benthic descriptions sufficient for processes (taxonomic generalizations, standardization sampling procedures focus on narrow subset available habitats) also limit utility conservation species (the large majority which insects). Using simple hypothetical simulations, some examples database one state USA (Illinois), large-scale inventory insect network US National Parks, I illustrate how limited their ability effectively species. identify, challenge, explore three basic assumptions implicit genus- family-level identification widely used science, then discuss failure may create empirical, theoretical philosophical obstacles interpretation certainly hinder offer hopeful suggestions improving within reach all ecologists.

Aquatic macrophyte and macroinvertebrate diversity and conservation in wetlands of the Sinos River basin.

Wetlands are important sites for biological conservation because they support rich biodiversity and present high productivity. Species-area relationship is an important tool in conservation planning and it has been extensively used for wetland management. This study had as aims: (1) to analyse macrophyte and macroinvertebrate diversity in the fragmented wetlands of the Sinos River basin; and (2...

Origination of Novel Aquatic Species of Genus Pseudocypretta Klie, 1932 (Ostracoda: Cyprididae)

Pseudocypretta Klie, 1932 is one of the few species that spread in aquatic environments; for the first time the genus Pseudocypretta was recorded from Iraq. The samples were collected in August 2004, Al -Hindiyah, Karbala Governorate (32°32'43.18"N, 44°13'24.97"E). Pseudocypretta maculata Klie, 1932, was recorded for the first time from Iraq. Some taxonomic characteristics were relied upon, suc...

Habitat differentiation in the threatened aquatic plant genus Baldellia (L.) Parl. (Alismataceae): Implications for conservation

A comparative analysis of the habitats of Baldellia ranunculoides (subsp. ranunculoides and subsp. repens) and Baldellia alpestris (Alismataceae) was carried out across central and western Europe. Soil samples from 43 populations were analyzed and the composition of accompanying vegetation was analyzed by canonical correspondence and indicator species analysis. Significant differences in the ha...

Exploring Species Level Taxonomy and Species Delimitation Methods in the Facultatively Self-Fertilizing Land Snail Genus Rumina (Gastropoda: Pulmonata)

Delimiting species in facultatively selfing taxa is a challenging problem of which the terrestrial pulmonate snail genus Rumina is a good example. These snails have a mixed breeding system and show a high degree of shell and color variation. Three nominal species (R. decollata, R. saharica and R. paivae) and two color morphs within R. decollata (dark and light) are currently recognized. The pre...

Enzymatic activities in traps of four aquatic species of the carnivorous genus Utricularia

• Here, enzymatic activity of five hydrolases was measured fluorometrically in the fluid collected from traps of four aquatic Utricularia species and in the water in which the plants were cultured. • In empty traps, the highest activity was always exhibited by phosphatases (6.1– 29.8 μmol l − 1 h − 1 ) and β -glucosidases (1.35–2.95 μmol l − 1 h − 1 ), while the activities of α -glucosidases, β...
